Thinking of conceiving? Well sometimes the act of having sex/love making or what ever you want to call it is not always enough. It could take days, weeks, months or even years for some who really don't give it much planning and thought. To be on the safe and smart side, it is important you take a few precautionary steps that will make getting pregnant easier.
Step 1. Schedule an exam with your OB/GYN to make sure you are in good all around health. At this point your doctor will usually not give you an infertility test but he can tell you a waiting period that he can administer one. Usually between 3 months to a year. They really want to make sure you are ready. In addition to getting a clean bill of health you will want to include or schedule your annual pelvic exam and check for STDs and cancer.
Step 2. Practice proper healthy nutrition. This really is a tough one for many of us. We (the "Daddy and Yourself") need to cut back, or out completely, on drinking alcohol, smokings, taking drugs and believe it or not caffeine. Giving up your morning coffee will help lower blood pressure and increase your chances of becoming pregnant.
Step 3. Buy a "Basal Body Thermometer". There are two types glass (traditional) or digital. I suggest the digital because of its ease of use and the speed to get a temperature is much faster.
Step 4. This step really plays off of Step 3. Once with the Basal Thermometer you will need to start charting your bodies temperatures. By doing this correctly you will know exactly when you are ovulating and when the best time you will be fertile. In addition many doctors require that you chart your temps to see if you have an infertility issue.
A quick overview of proper charting includes you starting the readings on the first day of your cycle. Take a temperature when you first wake up, hopefully at the same time, before you get out of bed and moving around. By doing this you will insure that your temperature is consistent to your resting temperature. The first half of your cycle, estrogen is the most prominent hormone and will surge before ovulation. Your temps will be in the low range normally around 96-97. After you ovulate your temp will rise roughly .4 of a degree. This happens because your body releases progesterone. Your temp will stay the same until either your next cycle or it could if you are pregnant. Your chart needs to be premade by hand, found in the back of a book or can be found at this online site which has been written by a woman like you and I, frustrated and confused why nothing else worked. Step 5. If you properly have charted your cycles then make sure you are have intercourse for several days before ovulation (when you are in that 96-97 degree range) as well as a couple days after ovulation. An egg will only live for 12 to 24 hours after ovulation. Male sperm can live up to 5 days if your cervical fluid is healthy. During this time it is also a great idea to hydrate, drink lots of water and start taking prenatal vitamins, which you can get, from your doctor or from the local pharmacy/vitamin store. This will help eliminate neural tube defects (Spina Bifida) with the baby.
Step 6. Relax take it one day at a time with the correct knowledge and being proactive becoming pregnant will be easier then you think!
